African Vocals History
African Vocals is an a-cappella band from Swakopmund/Namibia, that was founded in 2012. The group consists of ten to fifteen male singers now between 22 and 32 years.
Our repertoire comprises traditional Namibian and African songs in different ethnic languages, but also songs from other genres.
We have the big dream to make music our profession and we put a lot of hard work and sacrifice into this dream. We want to show the true and authentic Namibian culture, music, traditions and spirit to the world and convey a positive image of Africa.
On the other hand, with our own township backgrounds, we want to give hope, inspiration and encouragement to young people with the same underprivileged and disadvantaged background and experience, to have a dream and work hard for it. That is why we commit ourselves in charity projects in Mondesa and DRC, the townships in Swakopmund.
Our main achievements:
2014 we did our first Germany tour as African Vocals, which laid the foundation for a lot of contacts and a network of fans and supporters.
In 2016 we were the only vocal group among the five finalists in a field of 250 participants in the „Namibia talent show“.
In 2017 we won 2 gold medals in the Namibian Championships of the Performing Arts to represent Namibia in the World Championships of the Performing Arts in
Las Vegas in 2018. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints we could not make it to Las Vegas.
In March 2018 we had a roadshow for Gondwana Collections, a lodge group in Namibia, performing in several of their lodges.
In September 2018 we featured well-known Namibian artist Elemotho in our fundraising concert in Swakopmund, and in November 2018 Elemotho invited us to perform with him on the Windhoek Jazz Festival.
We had tours in Germany in 2014 and 2017 and 2019. On the last tour in Germany we gave concerts in 25 different cities, attending a-cappella festivals in Solingen, Wilhelmshaven and Hannover and performing in churches, concert halls and on open-air events. Due to the incredibly positive feedback and encouragement we found on our tour 2019, we decided to do the next tour to Germany in 2020 again, so another tour in Germany was planned from 26 April to 30 May 2020 with concerts in 22 different cities. This tour unfortunately had to be cancelled due to Covid19 as well as for 2021, and is now tentatively planned for 2022.
In 2020 we had a contract for performances on board the AIDAmira when the cruiseship stays in Walvis Bay, which also was ended due to covid 19. We also performed an “independence song” together with other artists on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Namibia´s Independence. Another project in 2020 was a short professional music video, presenting some of the natural highlights of the Erongo region.
Our current project is a new CD with mainly our own songs.
